They Did Not Get InJames 1:19

I Am Angrier Than She Is

This message is for the father carrying an anger his daughter does not seem to feel, who cannot find anybody to be angry at and has started aiming it at her for not minding enough

She is fine and it is making you furious.

That is not a sentence you would say out loud to anybody, and it is closer to the truth than anything you have said out loud in two weeks.

She read it, she was upset for about an evening, and then she went to a friend's on the Saturday and came back and started talking about something else entirely, and she has been genuinely all right ever since.

And you have not been all right since the Thursday.

You have been carrying something around a workplace and a car and a kitchen for two weeks that has no name and no address. It is heavy and it is hot and it is looking for somewhere to be put down.

And here is the part that has started to frighten you a little. Twice now it has come out sideways at her. Once about a plate. Once about the time she got up on Sunday. Both times you heard yourself and both times it was completely disproportionate, and both times she looked at you as though you had become slightly unfamiliar.

Because the anger has nowhere to go. There is nobody in this. An office made a decision. No individual wronged your daughter. There is not one person you could ring, and so a thing that is built for a target has been circling a house for two weeks looking for one.

Slow to wrath

There is an instruction in James that gets used to shut people up, and read properly it does nothing of the kind.

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. (James 1:19, King James Version)

Read the three speeds. Swift, slow, slow.

Not: do not hear, do not speak, do not be angry. Three verbs, all of them permitted, each with a pace attached. The wrath is in there, right alongside hearing and speaking, treated as an ordinary human capacity that has a proper speed rather than as a thing to be eliminated.

You are permitted the anger and asked only about its speed, and two weeks of carrying something hot has never once meant that a man has failed at anything. The Holy Spirit is the one in a car and a kitchen with a man who has nowhere to put it down, and James 1:19 gives wrath a pace rather than a prohibition.

Now the first speed, because it is the one that solves your particular problem.

Swift to hear. That is the one instruction given at full speed, and it is aimed outward. Toward the person in front of you.

And that is exactly what has stopped happening in your house for two weeks. A man carrying an unaddressed anger is not swift to hear anybody, because most of his attention is occupied by a search for a target, and the person actually standing in the kitchen is getting whatever attention is left over.

You have been slow to hear a girl who is standing right there, and an anger with no address has never once left a man any capacity for the person in front of him. The written word sets the hearing at full speed and the wrath at a walking pace, and the Spirit of God is the one who returns a man's attention to the room he is in.

Why it is coming out at her

Now the mechanism, and it is worth understanding, because knowing it is most of the cure.

An anger without a target does not evaporate. It attaches. And it attaches to whatever is nearest and safest, which in your house means the person who cannot leave and who loves you and who is, unluckily, the exact subject the anger is about.

That is why it came out about a plate.

You are not a man who has turned on his own daughter, and an anger that lands on the nearest safe person has never once been an anger that was aimed there. James 1:19 treats wrath as an ordinary capacity with a pace rather than a sin to be confessed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who redirects a thing before it teaches a nineteen year old something false.

And here is what she is receiving, which is not what is being sent. She is not receiving: my father is angry on my behalf. She is receiving: my father is annoyed with me, and I think it has something to do with the letter.

Which means that two weeks of your love, misdirected, is quietly teaching her that her disappointment made her father harder to live with.

You are able to redirect a thing before it teaches her something false, and an anger that came out sideways twice has never once been the message a father meant to send. The Holy Spirit is the one who tells a man what has actually been received on the other side of his own kitchen, and James 1:19 puts the hearing first and at speed.

And there is a second thing, and it is the one that explains why she seems fine and you do not.

She has one loss and it is hers. She has felt it, she has spoken to her friends about it, she has done all the ordinary processing that people do, and she has arrived somewhere.

A father has a different thing. Watching your own child be turned down is a specific and unbearable experience that has no ritual and no vocabulary and that nobody asks a man about. Nobody at work said: how are you finding it. They asked about her.

A decision about an application is not a verdict on a daughter or a father.

You are carrying something nobody has asked you about, and a father watching his child be refused has never once been the same experience as being the child. James 1:19 names wrath as ordinary and gives it a pace, and the Spirit of God is the one who names a man's own loss when nobody else has.

Tell her it was never aimed at her

So here is the thing to do, and it is two sentences long, and it is not an apology tour.

Tell her that the anger of the last two weeks was never aimed at her. And then let her change the subject.

Two sentences. I have been angry about this for two weeks. It was never at you.

That is all. Not an account of the plate, not an analysis of what happened on Sunday morning, not a request that she tell you it was fine. Two sentences, and then let her go wherever she goes next.

You are able to name it in two sentences and stop, and a short correction has never once needed a long apology attached to work. It is written in James 1:19 that a man is to be swift to hear, and the Holy Spirit is the one in the room when a father says a plain thing and then closes his mouth.

And let her change the subject. That instruction is deliberate.

Nineteen year olds resolve things by moving. If she says all right and then asks whether there is any bread, that is not her dismissing it. That is her receiving it and then getting out of the intense part as fast as she can, which is exactly what people her age do and it is not a failure of the conversation.

The information has landed. She now knows that her father was angry for her and not with her, and that will quietly repair every disproportionate moment of the last two weeks without either of you discussing them.

You are able to let her leave the conversation quickly, and a young person changing the subject has never once meant that a sentence did not land. Scripture puts the hearing at speed rather than the resolving, and the same Spirit who set those three paces is in your kitchen when she asks about the bread.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who has been driving around with something hot in the car for two weeks.

You are a father whose anger is love with nowhere to stand, and having nobody to be angry at has never once meant the anger was wrong to arrive. I am not going to tell you to calm down and I am not going to tell you she needs you to be steady. James 1:19 says let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who has been in that car with you since the Thursday.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have a loss of your own that nobody has asked you a single question about, and watching your child be refused has never once been a smaller thing than being refused. The written word gives wrath a pace and puts hearing at full speed, and the Spirit of God is the one in the two sentences you are about to say in your kitchen.

Two sentences. Then let her go and find the bread.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Heat I have been carrying round a car and a kitchen for two weeks, you are real and you are homeless, and you were never once aimed at my own daughter. James 1:19 says let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath, so by the Holy Spirit I say two sentences to her this week, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that I have become somebody my child finds unfamiliar, you have never once survived fifteen honest words. The written word permits the wrath and puts a pace on it rather than a prohibition, and by the Spirit of God I stop letting it attach to the nearest safe person.
  3. Father, You gave three speeds and You never once told a man to have no anger at all. Your word says swift to hear, so by Your Spirit I put my attention back on the girl who is standing in this kitchen.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
