I Am The One Who Reads The Letters

You did four of them last month and you did not think about it once.

The letter about the thing at the house. The call where somebody needed a date read out and then explained. The form your mother filled in with you standing beside her reading each line. And the one on the Sunday, which took an hour and which you did in your room while a group message was going about something else entirely.

Nobody thanked you for any of them, and that is not unkindness. It is that this is simply what you do, and it has been what you do since about the age of thirteen, and nobody in that house can remember it being otherwise.

And at the same time you are eighteen and doing something new and difficult, four hundred miles from all of it, and you have not once thought of yourself as somebody who is carrying two jobs.

Here is what I want to name, right at the start, because nobody else is going to name it for you.

What you do for that household is work. It is skilled, it is exhausting, and it is invisible, and most of the people in your year have never done anything remotely like it.

With the other hand held a weapon

There is a description in Nehemiah of how a wall got built while a threat was standing at the edge of it.

They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon. (Nehemiah 4:17, King James Version)

One hand in the work. One hand holding something else.

And notice how it is described. Not as heroism. Not as a temporary arrangement to be admired. It is stated as a working method, plainly, as the way that particular wall was actually built under those particular conditions.

You are building with one hand and holding with the other, and a person doing two things at once has never once been doing either of them badly. Nehemiah 4:17 records the two handed method as an ordinary description of the work, and the Holy Spirit is the one in a room where a form got done on a Sunday.

Now the thing that verse quietly settles.

The wall got built. That is the point of the chapter. Nobody in it is described as being at half capacity, and nobody suggests that the work would have been better if the weapon had been put down.

The two handed people finished the wall.

You have been finishing a wall with one hand, and doing two jobs at once has never once meant that either one was being done at half strength. The written word reports the wall as completed by exactly those people, and the Spirit of God is the one who counts a two handed worker at full weight.

What nobody has told you

Now let me say the practical thing, because there is a cost and it is worth naming precisely.

The comparison being run in your head is against people whose hands are both free.

That is the actual problem. Not the work. The comparison. Somebody in your year has a whole week available for one thing, and the week on your side is that same week minus the letters, minus the calls, minus the hour on Sunday. When the comparison comes out well, nothing is concluded. When it comes out badly, something gets concluded about a person.

That is not an honest measurement and it never has been.

You are being measured against people carrying one thing, and a comparison that ignores half of what somebody does has never once been a fair account of them. The Holy Spirit is the one who puts a true measurement in front of somebody, and Nehemiah 4:17 states the two handed condition as part of the record rather than as an excuse.

And here is the second thing, and this one matters for the next ten years. The skill is real and it is invisible from the inside.

You have a set of abilities that were never once given a name in this house, and something a person has always been able to do has never once been the same as something easy. Nehemiah 4:17 records the two handed workers as the ones who finished the wall, and the Holy Spirit is the one who names a thing that has gone unnamed since somebody was thirteen.

Reading an official letter and turning it into plain speech for somebody who needs it is a genuine and uncommon ability. Sitting with a person while they do something difficult and frightening, and being the one who is calm, is a genuine and uncommon ability. Holding a household's administration at eighteen is a genuine and uncommon ability.

All three are already there and none of them has ever been counted, because they were learned at home, and things learned at home do not feel like skills. They feel like the furniture.

Doing this for your family is not a verdict on anything about you.

You are holding three real abilities you have never counted, and something learned at a kitchen table has never once been worth less than the same thing learned anywhere else. Nehemiah 4:17 describes the method without one word of pity for the people using it, and the Spirit of God is the one who names a skill that a person has always had.

Tell one person outside the family

So here is the thing to do, and it will be uncomfortable for exactly one minute.

Tell one person outside the family what you actually do for your household. In plain sentences. Without making it sound small.

Not as a complaint. Not as an explanation for anything. Just an account of it: I read the official letters at home. I sit with my mother while she does forms. I did four of those last month.

You are able to describe your own work plainly, and a true account of what somebody does has never once been the same thing as a complaint about it. The Holy Spirit is the one present when somebody says out loud what they have been doing since they were thirteen, and it is written in Nehemiah 4:17 that every one wrought with one hand and held with the other.

And without making it sound small. That is the difficult half.

Everything in a person wants to add the shrinkers. It is not a big deal. It only takes a minute. Everybody does it in our family. Every one of those is a way of getting the sentence out while making sure nobody takes it seriously, and that has been happening reflexively for about five years.

Say it flat. Let it be the size it is.

You are able to say a true thing without shrinking it on the way out, and one plain account has never once been an exaggeration when it was simply accurate. Scripture states the two handed method plainly and never once minimizes what it cost, and the same Spirit who left it standing is with you while you say it without the shrinkers.
