You have got quite good at it now.
That is the part that has started to worry you. In the beginning it was clumsy. You said something at dinner in the spring about how you had gone off the idea, and it came out too fast and you could hear it and you were sure they could hear it too.
They did not. Or they decided not to.
And since then you have refined it. You have a whole account now. You have reasons. You have things you say about it that make it sound like a considered decision by a thoughtful seventeen year old who weighed it up and moved on. Your aunt asked about it in July and you did the whole thing and she said how sensible you were.
And you went upstairs afterward and sat on your bed for a while.
Because here is the situation you are in, and nobody in your house knows about it: you are now defending a position you do not hold, to people you love, indefinitely.
And it started as a kindness. It genuinely did. You saw what the number was doing to your mother and you thought, if I do not want it, this stops hurting her.
The parents for the children
There is a line in Second Corinthians where Paul explains why he refuses to be a financial weight on a church, and the reason he gives is a family one.
for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children. (2 Corinthians 12:14, King James Version)
Read the direction of it.
The flow goes one way. Parents to children. That is stated as the ordinary and proper arrangement, not as a nice ideal, and Paul builds an entire argument about his own conduct on top of it.
And what you have been doing since the spring is running it backwards. Quietly, at seventeen, with the best motives available to anybody: you have been laying up for your parents. Not money. Something more expensive. You have been spending your own hope to reduce their discomfort.
You are running a household arrangement backwards, and a seventeen year old carrying her parents has never once been what Scripture asks for. Second Corinthians 12:14 names the direction plainly and gives it as the reason for a grown man's whole approach, and the Holy Spirit is the one in a bedroom with somebody who came upstairs after an aunt said how sensible she was.
Now the part I want you to sit with, because it is not obvious.
The verse is not saying children owe their parents nothing. It is saying something much more specific: that the burden of provision does not travel upward, and that when it does, something has gone out of order in a way that needs correcting rather than admiring.
You have been admired for something that needs correcting, and being called sensible by your aunt has never once meant that what you were doing was right. The Spirit of God is the one who tells the difference between a good motive and a good arrangement, and the written word states the direction as the settled order of things.
What it will cost to keep it up
Now let me tell you what happens if this continues, because nobody draws the line forward for a seventeen year old.
There is no getting out of it later.
Every month you keep this up, the story gets more established, and the correction gets more expensive. By next summer it will not be a matter of saying "actually I do want it". It will be a matter of saying "I have been lying to you both for a year", which is an entirely different sentence and a much harder one, and by then you will genuinely not be able to say it.
You are able to correct this while it is still small, and a story that has run for six months has never once been as expensive to undo as a story that has run for two years. Second Corinthians 12:14 sets the direction of the carrying plainly and does not wait for anybody to grow up first, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an October conversation possible that a July conversation was not.
And the second cost is heavier, and it is happening now rather than later.
Your parents are living beside a daughter who they believe changed her mind. So they have no idea that their daughter is disappointed. Which means they cannot say anything about it, cannot be sorry with her about it, cannot sit next to her in it. The removal is complete, and it was done from the inside.
A household that cannot fund a thing is not a verdict on anybody in it.
You are able to be in a hard year with people instead of beside them, and a family that knows the truth has never once been a heavier place to be than a family that does not. Second Corinthians 12:14 puts the carrying in the parents' direction, and the Spirit of God is the one who puts a young person back inside her own household.
And here is the thing you cannot see from seventeen, which I can tell you plainly.
Your mother would rather carry the disappointment than have it hidden from her. Every parent would. The hiding is the part that would genuinely wound her, and it is the only part of this you actually control.
You are able to hand her the only part of this that is yours, and telling the truth about what you want has never once been the same as asking anybody for money. The Spirit of God is the one who separates a want from a demand in a kitchen, and 2 Corinthians 12:14 speaks about the flow of burden and says nothing whatever against a child being honest.
Say that you did want it
So here is what to do, and both halves are necessary.
Tell one of your parents that you did want it. And say plainly that you said otherwise to make it easier for them.
The second half is the one that will want to be left out, and it is the one that does all the work. Without it, this is a girl who changed her mind twice, and it will be confusing and slightly annoying and it will not land.
With it, this is a daughter who tells them what she was doing and why. And that sentence, said out loud by a seventeen year old, is one of the more remarkable things a parent can hear.
You are able to say what you did and why you did it, and admitting a kindness that went wrong has never once cost anybody the respect of the people who raised them. It is written in Second Corinthians 12:14 that the parents lay up for the children and not the reverse, and the Holy Spirit is the one in the room while a young woman says the whole of it.
Then do not ask for anything.
That is not a rule about being polite. It is because the request would immediately convert a true confession into a strategy, in their ears and eventually in yours, and it would ruin something that is worth much more than the thing you wanted in the first place.
Say what is true. Ask for nothing. Let them do whatever they do.
You are able to tell the truth and want nothing back from it, and an honest sentence with no request attached has never once been a manipulation. Scripture states the direction of the carrying and leaves the speaking free, and the same Spirit who wrote that line is standing in your kitchen while you say it.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who has just performed the whole account for an aunt and gone upstairs afterward.
You are allowed to want what you want, and a lie told out of love has never once stopped being a lie you have to live inside. I am not going to tell you that you were being dishonest and I am not going to tell you the money appears. Second Corinthians 12:14 says the parents lay up for the children, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who was on your bed with you in July.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have been carrying something upward that was never meant to travel that way, and being seventeen has never once made you responsible for how your mother feels about a number. The Spirit of God is the one who is in the sentence you are about to say in your own kitchen, and the written word sets the direction of the carrying in one plain clause.
I did want it. And I said otherwise to make it easier.
Declare this over yourself
- Account I have been giving since the spring about how I went off the idea, you are polished and you are false, and you were never a kindness to anybody in this house. Second Corinthians 12:14 says the parents lay up for the children, so by the Holy Spirit I tell my mother the truth this week, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that my wanting it is a weight on people I love, you have never once been heavier than a daughter they cannot reach. The written word sets the carrying in one direction and leaves a child free to speak, and by the Spirit of God I stop laying up for my own parents.
- Father, You wrote the direction of it into one plain clause and You built a grown man's whole conduct on top of it. Your word says the parents for the children, so by Your Spirit I say the true thing and I ask for nothing after it.
