The Other Parents At The Gate

You have started parking further down.

Not consciously. Not as a decision. You just happened to park two streets back one Tuesday because of a van, and it was easier, and you have parked two streets back every day since, and the walk means you arrive about forty seconds after the group has already re-formed and turned inward.

Forty seconds is enough. Forty seconds means you come in at the edge and can leave from the edge.

Because the conversation, since about April, has been the same conversation. Deposits. What the place said. Somebody flew out to look at it. Somebody else is driving down in October with a car full of things.

And every one of those people is decent. That is the part that makes it worse. Not one of them is showing off. They are talking about their children the way people have talked about their children at that gate for eleven years, and you used to be the one telling the funniest story in the middle of it.

Now you stand at the edge with your keys in your hand, and you say something at the right moments, and you leave first.

Here is what I want to name, before anything else, because it has not been named and it is doing damage: what is happening to you at that gate is not envy. You do not want their money and you are not resentful of their children. It is something else entirely, and it has a shape, and the shape is that you have started to feel like a man who has to keep quiet.

Rejoicing in himself alone

There is a verse in Galatians that reads like it was written for a school gate.

But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. (Galatians 6:4, King James Version)

Read the middle of it. Rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.

Paul is describing a way of holding your own life that does not require anybody else's life to be a certain shape. The measuring instrument is your own work, examined on its own terms, and the verse says outright that this is the only kind of assessment that produces any joy at all.

And the reason it says so is in the last two words. Not in another. Because the moment the instrument becomes somebody else, the reading is worthless whichever way it comes out.

You are a man with your own work to be proved, and a conversation about somebody else's arrangements has never once been the instrument you were meant to be read by. Galatians 6:4 puts the measuring inside a man's own life, and the Holy Spirit is the one standing at a gate with somebody holding his keys.

Now notice what the verse does not say. It does not say to stop caring about other people. It does not say to withdraw, or to stop listening, or to find different friends.

It relocates the measuring. That is all it does. The people stay. The conversation stays. The instrument moves.

You have been reading yourself off the wrong instrument, and eleven years of friendship have never once been the thing that went wrong here. The Spirit of God is the one who changes what a man is doing while he stands in the same place, and the written word moves the measuring rather than the company.

What the parking is actually costing

Now the practical harm, because it is real and it is compounding.

The parking is not the problem. The parking is a symptom, and the thing it is doing is quietly deciding what kind of man stands at that gate for the next two years.

Here is how it works. You arrive late, you stand at the edge, you leave first. So they see less of you. So the group re-forms slightly without you in it. So next week there is marginally less of a space where you used to stand, which makes arriving harder, which makes parking two streets back more attractive.

Six weeks of that and a man who was in the middle of a group for eleven years is on the outside of it, and nobody in that group has done a single thing wrong.

You are being moved out of a group by forty seconds a day, and a small habit repeated has never once needed anybody's permission to change a man's whole standing. Galatians 6:4 tells a man to prove his own work rather than to withdraw from other men, and the Holy Spirit is the one who names a drift while it is still a drift.

And there is a second cost, and this one is heavier.

Your daughter is watching how you carry this. Not the money. She is not thinking about the money nearly as much as you assume. She is watching whether her father can stand among his friends without shrinking, because that is the thing she will copy for the next forty years when she is in a room with people who have more than she does.

That is not a burden I am putting on anybody. It is what is already happening, and it is already being taught, whether the car is at the gate or two streets back.

The size of what a household can do is not a verdict on the man who runs it.

You are teaching her something at that gate whichever way you go, and a father standing among his friends has never once needed a matching bank balance to belong there. Galatians 6:4 tells a man to look at his own work and take his joy from it, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a man in a group where he has stopped feeling like himself.

Stand in the next one

So here is what to do, and it is not a conversation and it is not a confession.

Stand in the next conversation you would have avoided. Say nothing about your own situation. Stay until it ends.

All three parts matter, and the second one is the one that surprises people.

You are not going to tell them. Not because it is shameful, but because the goal here is not disclosure. The goal is to prove to your own body that you can stand in that circle without a matching story and without dying of it. Adding your situation to the conversation makes it a moment. This is not a moment. This is a Tuesday.

You are able to stand in a conversation without an equivalent story to offer, and having nothing to add has never once been the same thing as having no place there. The Holy Spirit is the one standing beside somebody who has decided to stay until the end, and it is written in Galatians 6:4 that a man proves his own work and rejoices in that alone.

And park where you used to park.

That sounds like nothing. It is not nothing. It is the physical undoing of the exact mechanism that has been moving you to the edge, and it costs about ninety seconds a day, and it will be the hardest ninety seconds of the week for about four days and then it will be nothing at all.

You are able to put your car back where it was, and ninety uncomfortable seconds have never once been too expensive to buy back a place among your friends. Scripture keeps the man in the company and moves only what he measures himself by, and the same Spirit who wrote that line is with you on the walk from the car.
