We Cannot PayMark 12:44

The Money Went Years Ago

This message is for the household that spent everything on something necessary six years ago, who keep re-explaining a decision that was right, to people who never asked and to themselves

It comes up about once a month and it is never anybody's fault.

Somebody says something entirely innocent. About a holiday, or a car, or what somebody else is doing this year. And within about four sentences one of you is explaining, again, why there is nothing there.

Not defensively. Not angrily. Just the account: what happened in the spring six years ago, why it had to be done, what it cost, and how there was no other version available to anybody.

And the person listening always says the same thing, which is of course, absolutely, you did the right thing.

And then it comes up again a month later.

Here is what I want to name at the start, because I do not think either of you has seen it clearly: nobody is asking. In six years, not one person has questioned that decision. Not a relative, not a friend, not the two of you to each other.

The explanation is not being requested. It is being volunteered, month after month, and the only possible audience for a defense that nobody asked for is the person delivering it.

All her living

There is a moment in Mark where Jesus watches people put money into the treasury, and He says something about a woman that turns the whole accounting upside down.

For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living. (Mark 12:44, King James Version)

Read what He is measuring.

He is not measuring the amount. He says so directly: the others gave out of abundance, and their totals were larger, and He passes over the totals entirely. What He measures is the proportion, and He calls hers all her living, which is the phrase for everything a person has to live on.

And He praises it. He does not describe it as reckless, or as poor planning, or as something that will cause difficulties later. He holds it up, in public, as the thing worth noticing in that whole courtyard.

You are being read by a different measure than the one you have been using, and a family that spent everything on the right thing has never once been counted as having spent it badly. The Holy Spirit is the one at a table where somebody has just started explaining again, and Mark 12:44 passes over the totals and names the proportion.

Now the part that speaks directly into your last six years.

Nobody in that passage asks the woman to explain herself. She does not stand up and give an account of her circumstances. She puts in what she has and she goes, and the explanation is supplied by somebody else entirely, and He supplies it as praise.

You have never once owed anybody the account you keep giving, and a decision that was right has never once required a defense to stay right. The written word puts the explaining in the mouth of the Lord rather than the woman, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes an account out of a person's hands.

What the explaining is doing

Now the practical harm, because there is real harm and it is not obvious.

Every time you tell it, you rehearse it. And a decision that gets rehearsed as a defense slowly becomes filed in the household as a controversy rather than as a fact.

Your children are hearing this. That matters more than the social awkwardness. A fifteen year old who has heard her parents explain a family decision thirty or forty times does not conclude that her parents were right. She concludes that there is something about that decision that requires explaining, which means there must be a case against it somewhere, which means she starts quietly looking for what it is.

That is the opposite of what either of you intends every single time you open your mouth.

You are able to hand your children a fact instead of a controversy, and thirty explanations of one spring have never once made that spring easier for a fifteen year old to hear about. Mark 12:44 reports the giving and lets the Lord supply every word of interpretation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the defending out of a parent's mouth.

You are able to stop rehearsing a thing into a controversy, and a fact repeated as a defense has never once stayed a fact in a young person's hearing. The Holy Spirit is the one who tells a household when the explaining has started doing damage, and Mark 12:44 records the act without one word of justification from the woman herself.

And here is the second harm, which is the one that is costing you.

Six years of explaining has turned the decision into the load bearing wall of your family's story. Everything gets routed through it. A conversation about a holiday becomes a conversation about that spring. And a family whose every ordinary conversation runs through one hard year is a family living in that year permanently, whether or not the money situation ever changes.

Spending what a household had is not a verdict on the household.

You are able to live in this year rather than in that one, and six years of a story told the same way have never once meant the story cannot be told differently tomorrow. Mark 12:44 names the giving and moves on without lingering over it, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a family put a year down.

Say it once with no reason attached

So here is the thing to do, and it is a single sentence and the missing half is the point.

Say the decision once, out loud, in a flat sentence with no reason attached, to somebody who lives in your house.

The money went in the spring of that year. That is where it went. Full stop.

No because. No it had to be done. No there was no other option. Every one of those is the defense, and the defense is the thing that has been turning a fact into a case for six years.

You are able to state a fact and refuse to argue it, and a sentence with no reason on the end of it has never once needed one to be true. It is written in Mark 12:44 that she cast in all her living, with no reason given by her anywhere, and the Holy Spirit is the one in the room while a household hears a plain sentence for the first time.

And here is why it has to be said to somebody in your own house rather than at a table full of friends.

The audience for the last six years of explaining has been each other. That is where the case is being tried, quietly, every month. So the plain version has to be heard in the same room where the defensive version has been heard forty times, by the same people.

Once. Flat. Then talk about something else.

You are able to change what your own children hear about that year, and one flat sentence has never once been too small to reclassify a decision in a family. Scripture reports the act plainly and lets the Lord do the interpreting, and the same Spirit who kept her silent in that courtyard is in your kitchen when you say it once and stop.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over two people who explained it again on Sunday to somebody who had not asked.

You are a family that spent what it had on the right thing, and a decision made six years ago has never once been on trial in this house. I am not going to tell you it was a mistake and I am not going to tell you anything comes back. Mark 12:44 says she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is at that table with you.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have been giving evidence in a case nobody brought, and six years of explaining have never once been required by one single person who loves you. The written word holds up the proportion rather than the total and lets the Lord do the speaking, and the Spirit of God is the one in the flat sentence you are about to say in your own kitchen.

Once. No because. Then something else.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Account I have given about that spring forty times to people who never asked, you are accurate and you are finished, and you were never once required by anybody in this family. Mark 12:44 says she of her want did cast in all that she had, so by the Holy Spirit I say it flat in my own kitchen with no reason on the end, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that a decision without a defense sounds like a decision I regret, you have never once been what my children are hearing. The written word lets the act stand and puts the explaining in the mouth of the Lord, and by the Spirit of God I stop giving evidence in a case nobody brought.
  3. Father, You watched a woman put in everything she had to live on and You praised the proportion and passed over every total in that courtyard. Your word calls it all her living, so by Your Spirit I put that year down, and I live in this one.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
