We Cannot PayEphesians 4:25

She Still Does Not Know The Number

This message is for the mother who has kept the true figure from her daughter since the spring, letting her plan around a number that does not exist, because saying it felt like taking something away

It was March when you knew.

Not suspected. Knew. You had the figures in front of you and you understood exactly what they meant, and you understood it on a Tuesday afternoon while she was at school.

And that evening she came in and told you about a place she had heard about, and her whole face was doing the thing it does, and you said that sounds wonderful.

That was March.

It is now the autumn, and she has spent seven months building on top of that sentence. There are notes. There is a list on her wall. There is a conversation she had with her aunt in June that you overheard from the hall and did not correct.

And you have not lied to her once, which is exactly the problem, because you have not lied and she has still ended up believing something that is not true.

Here is what I want to say first, before anything else: you did not do this out of cowardice.

You did it because on that Tuesday in March, saying the number out loud felt like reaching into her hands and taking something out of them, and every day since it has felt like that, only slightly more so.

Speak every man truth

There is a line in Ephesians that people read as being about lying, and it is about something a good deal more specific than that.

Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. (Ephesians 4:25, King James Version)

Look at the reason attached to the end. For we are members one of another.

That is not a warning about being caught out. It is not about honesty as a virtue in the abstract. The reason given for telling the truth is that the two people are joined, and a joined thing cannot function on wrong information in one half of it.

That is what has been happening in your house since March. Not a lie. A joined household running with the true figure in one head and a different figure in another.

You are two people who are joined, and a household running on two different sets of numbers has never once been able to move in the same direction. The Holy Spirit is the one standing in a kitchen where one person knows and the other does not, and Ephesians 4:25 gives the reason as membership rather than morality.

And notice the verb. Speak. Not disclose, not confess, not admit. Speak.

The verse treats truth as ordinary speech between people who belong to each other. It is not a ceremony. It is not a difficult moment to be got through. It is simply the normal traffic between two members of the same body.

You are able to speak a true thing rather than confess it, and a real number has never once had to arrive as a ceremony in a family. The written word calls it speaking and nothing more, and the Spirit of God is the one who turns an event back into a sentence.

Seven months is not nothing

Now the honest part, and I say it as somebody entirely on your side.

The seven months cost something, and pretending otherwise would not be kindness.

She has built on it. Not just plans, which can be rebuilt, but a picture of herself in a particular kind of year, and pictures like that grow roots. And more than that, she has spent seven months in a house where a true thing was known and not said, and children can feel the shape of a withheld thing even when they cannot name it.

That is not a reason for shame. It is a reason for this week rather than next month.

You are able to stop the count today, and seven months of holding something has never once made the eighth month easier than the seventh. Ephesians 4:25 tells joined people to speak rather than to wait for a moment, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes today possible for somebody who could not manage March.

And here is the part I most want you to hear, because it is the thing that has been keeping the sentence in your mouth.

The number has been treated in this house as a thing that gets taken away from her. It is not. The number was always there. It was there in March, it was there in June while she talked to her aunt, and it is there tonight while she is upstairs.

You are not removing one thing from her hands, and telling somebody what has been in the room the whole time has never once been the same as taking it from them. The Holy Spirit is the one who is in a kitchen where a true thing finally gets said aloud, and Ephesians 4:25 puts plain speech between joined people as the ordinary condition of belonging.

A figure on a page is not a verdict on what a mother has given her daughter.

You are handing her information and not taking anything from her, and a number that was always true has never once been made real by somebody saying it. Ephesians 4:25 puts truth between members as the ordinary condition of belonging, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates a difficult fact from an act of cruelty.

Open with the seven months

So here is how to do it, and the opening line is the whole craft of it.

Tell her the real figure this week, and open with the words I should have told you this in the spring.

That sentence does three things at once, and it does them before the number arrives.

It tells her the truth about the delay, so she does not spend the next month working out how long you knew and feeling foolish about the conversation with her aunt. It puts the responsibility for the seven months exactly where it belongs, which is on you, and off her. And it signals, before she has heard anything, that what is coming is honest.

You are able to name the delay in the same breath as the number, and an admission about seven months has never once weakened what a mother says next. It is written in Ephesians 4:25 to speak truth because we are members one of another, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in a sentence that opens by telling the truth about itself.

Then say the figure. Plainly, once, with no apology after it.

And then say nothing at all, because the next part belongs to her, and whatever she does with it, including being angry, is her legitimate first reaction to a thing she is learning seven months late.

If she is angry, do not defend the seven months. You have already named them. Let the anger be about the delay and not about the money, because the delay is the part that is actually yours.

You are able to receive an anger that belongs to you, and letting somebody be upset about a real thing has never once been the same as losing them. Scripture puts the speaking of truth between people who are joined, so the joining survives the speaking, and the same Spirit who wrote that line is in the kitchen while your daughter reacts.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has been carrying a figure since March.

You are a mother who was being kind, and a truth held back out of love has never once stopped being a truth that has to be said. I am not going to tell you that you should have said it in March and I am not going to tell you it will be an easy conversation. Ephesians 4:25 says speak every man truth, for we are members one of another, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is in that kitchen tonight.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have information in your hands and not a weapon, and a number that has been true since the spring has never once been made worse by finally being spoken. The written word gives the reason as membership rather than morality, and the Spirit of God is the one who is in the sentence that opens with the spring.

I should have told you this in the spring. Then the number. Then quiet.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Number I have carried since March, you are fixed and you are true, and you were never something I was taking out of my daughter's hands. Ephesians 4:25 says speak every man truth, for we are members one of another, so by the Holy Spirit I tell her this week and I open with the spring, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that saying it takes something away from her, you have never once described what is actually happening. The written word gives membership as the reason for plain speech, and by the Spirit of God I stop calling a withheld thing a kindness.
  3. Father, You joined the truth and the belonging in one sentence and You made the second one the reason for the first. Your word says we are members one of another, so by Your Spirit I speak, and I let my daughter be angry about the months.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
