My Father Paid For Mine

Your father did it without a word.

That is the part that sits with you. There was no conversation about it. There was no sitting down at a table with figures. It was simply understood, the way things were understood in that house, that this was the sort of thing a father did, and it was done, and nobody ever discussed it again.

You did not even thank him properly. You were nineteen. You said thanks Dad in a parking lot and got on with your life, and it did not occur to you until you were about thirty five what it must have taken.

And now it is your turn, and you cannot.

You have run it four different ways. It does not go. And underneath the arithmetic there is a sentence that has been in your head since about the middle of August, and it is not about money at all.

It is: my father managed this and I have not.

And under that one there is a bigger and worse one, which you have never said out loud to anybody, and it goes something like: this family went forward for two generations and then it stopped, and it stopped on my watch.

Of thine own have we given thee

There is a prayer near the end of First Chronicles that a king prays in front of an entire nation, at the exact moment when the giving is going well.

But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee. (1 Chronicles 29:14, King James Version)

Read when he says it. This is not a prayer of a man who has come up short. This is the moment of abundance. Everything has been provided, the offering is enormous, and the whole nation is watching.

And in that moment the king says: who am I. And then he says something that takes the ground out from under the entire way this has been thought about since August.

All things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.

You are handling something that was never yours to begin with, and a man who could not pass on what he was given has never once been the source of it in the first place. First Chronicles 29:14 says outright that the giving was God's own coming back to Him, and the Holy Spirit is the one standing in a kitchen with a man doing arithmetic in August.

Now hold that against what your father did.

Your father did not generate that money out of himself. It came through him. He was, in the language of that verse, handling something of God's own and passing it along, and he happened to be standing in a decade and a job and a set of circumstances where it was there to pass.

That does not make what he did small. It makes it a gift that went through a man rather than a gift that was manufactured by one.

You have been measuring yourself as a source, and no man in Scripture has ever once been treated as the origin of what came through his hands. The written word puts the origin outside the man in the very moment when the man looks most impressive, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a ledger off somebody who was never meant to be balancing it.

The ledger is not yours

Now the harder part, and it is about that second sentence, the one that has never been said out loud.

It stopped on my watch.

That sentence assumes something enormous, and I want to name what it is: it assumes there is a family ledger, that it runs across generations, that each man is responsible for his own column, and that the total is a verdict on him.

Nothing in Scripture works like that. Nothing.

You are carrying a ledger that nobody ever handed you, and a column of numbers has never once been the record that a father is actually keeping. The Holy Spirit is the one who tells a man which accounts he is genuinely responsible for, and First Chronicles 29:14 has a king refusing to take credit at the peak of his own generosity.

And here is what makes the ledger idea specifically cruel, which is why I want it named rather than argued with.

It is invisible. It never gets said out loud. It sits underneath ordinary sentences like "I wanted better for him than I had", which is a good sentence and a loving one and, if you look at it closely, is doing arithmetic. Better than. More than. Which requires a scale, and a scale requires a number, and once there is a number there is a man who came in under it.

What your father actually gave you was not on that scale at all. Think about it honestly for a second. What do you actually remember?

A family being unable to fund something is not a verdict on the man at the head of it.

You are remembering things that were never on the ledger, and the parts of a father that a son keeps have never once been the parts with a figure attached. 1 Chronicles 29:14 puts the origin of everything outside the man who is handing it over, and the Spirit of God is the one who reminds a son what he actually kept from his own father.

Tell him the thing that had no money in it

So here is what to do, and it does two things at once.

Tell your son one thing your own father gave you that had no money in it at all, and say why it has stayed with you since.

Not a lesson. Not "and that is what really matters, son". A specific thing. The way he said one sentence to you when you were fourteen. What he did the week you failed something. The Saturday mornings. The fact that he never once raised his voice at your mother in front of you.

You are able to hand your son something that was never on any ledger, and a memory with no figure attached has never once been worth less than what it cost. It is written in First Chronicles 29:14 that all things come of God and that what a man gives is God's own returning, and the Holy Spirit is the one in the room when a man tells his son about his own father.

Here is why this is the exact right thing to say this month rather than any other month.

Right now your son is watching a father who cannot fund something, and he is forming, at nineteen, a definition of what a father is. If the only transaction in the room is the one that is not happening, the definition forms around the absence.

Tell him what your father gave you that was not money and you have handed him a completely different definition, in one sentence, without lecturing him and without mentioning the current situation at all.

You are able to define fatherhood in front of him without arguing about it, and one true memory has never once needed a moral attached to do its work. Scripture records a king naming the true origin of a gift in public, and the same Spirit who kept that prayer in the book is with you in a conversation about your own dad.
