I Chose This And I Still Defend It At Night

In daylight it is settled.

That is worth saying first, because it is true and because the two o'clock version will try to tell you otherwise. At eleven in the morning, working, with people about, there is no question at all. You chose this. It was the right call. You would make it again.

And at about two in the morning the entire thing reopens.

Not as a feeling. As an argument, with an opponent in it, and the opponent says things. About what other people are doing. About the thing your uncle said in June. About a version of your life five years from now that has been constructed entirely out of one remark.

And you answer it. That is the exhausting part. You lie there constructing rebuttals, at two in the morning, in a debate that nobody else is attending.

Here is what I want to name at the start.

There is nobody there. You have been answering a room full of people, several of whom you have not spoken to in a year, none of whom have said anything to you about this since the summer.

Fully persuaded in his own mind

There is a line in Romans that settles more than people notice.

One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. (Romans 14:5, King James Version)

Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

Notice where the persuading happens. In his own mind. Not in front of anybody, not to the satisfaction of anybody else, not by winning an argument with a room.

The whole verse is about people who genuinely disagree about something real, and the instruction is not that one of them should convince the other. It is that each of them should be settled internally.

You are being asked to be settled in your own mind and not to win anything, and a decision that is genuinely made has never once required anybody else's agreement to stand. Romans 14:5 puts the persuading inside a man's own mind and nowhere else, and the Holy Spirit is the one in a room at two in the morning with somebody constructing a rebuttal.

And notice the phrase before it: one esteemeth one day above another, another esteemeth every day alike.

Two people, doing genuinely different things, on genuinely different reasoning, and the passage does not adjudicate between them. It does not say which is correct. It leaves both standing and moves on.

You have two roads standing side by side in Scripture with no ruling between them, and a passage that declines to adjudicate has never once left anybody obliged to defend their own. The written word sets the difference out and refuses to settle it, and the Spirit of God is the one who declines to hold a trial that nobody called for.

Why it only happens at two

Now the practical part, and the timing is the whole of the diagnosis.

An argument that only runs at one specific hour is not a review. It is a symptom of the hour.

At two in the morning, a person is alone, tired, unstimulated, and physically at the lowest point of the day. Whatever gets thought at that hour arrives with a particular weight and a particular hopelessness, and it will do that about any subject, reliably, in almost anybody.

If the decision were genuinely unsettled, it would come up at eleven in the morning too. It does not. It has never once come up at eleven in the morning.

You are able to trust the version of yourself that operates in daylight, and a decision that holds all day has never once been overturned by the hour when nobody can think straight. The Holy Spirit is the one who tells a man which version of himself is doing the reading, and Romans 14:5 puts the persuading inside a man's own mind and names no hour for the testing.

You are looking at a symptom of an hour rather than a finding about a decision, and something that never appears in daylight has never once been a review of anything. Romans 14:5 asks for a settled mind and says nothing about which hour it should be tested in, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a man what two o'clock is actually doing.

And here is the second thing, which is what makes it unwinnable.

You cannot win an argument against an absent opponent.

That is structural. A real conversation with your uncle would take about four minutes and would probably end with him being far less interested in your decision than the two o'clock version of him is. But the two o'clock version never concedes, never gets tired, and never has anything else to do, because he is made entirely of your own material and has no life of his own to get back to.

Choosing this is not a verdict on anybody.

You are arguing with an opponent who has nothing else to do, and a version of somebody assembled at two in the morning has never once been able to lose an argument. Romans 14:5 puts the settling inside one man and requires no opponent at all, and the Spirit of God is the one who empties a room that was never occupied.

Write the sentence and name the voice

So here is the thing to do, and it takes about two minutes and it is done in daylight.

Write down the one sentence you keep arguing against. And put beside it the name of whoever actually said it.

The sentence first, in the actual words the two o'clock version uses. Not a summary. The exact thing.

You are able to take a sentence out of the dark and put it on paper, and something written down in daylight has never once been the same size as the same thing at two in the morning. The Holy Spirit is the one at a table where somebody writes down what has been keeping him awake, and it is written in Romans 14:5 that every man is to be fully persuaded in his own mind.

Then the name, and this is where it comes apart.

Because one of three things will happen. Either there is a name, and it is somebody who said it once, in June, in passing, and has not thought about it since. Or there is a name, and it is somebody whose opinion you would not accept about anything else in your life. Or there is no name at all, and the sentence turns out to belong to a composite made of half-remembered faces.

All three of those are survivable in daylight. None of them survives contact with a pen.

And keep the paper. Not to read at two in the morning, because nothing read at two in the morning helps. Read it at eleven in the morning, once, so that the daylight version of you has met the opponent and knows what he is made of.

You are able to look at your own opponent in daylight, and a thing examined at eleven in the morning has never once had the same authority at two. Scripture puts the persuading in a man's own mind, in the ordinary course of his life, and the same Spirit who put it there is at the table while the pen moves.
