He said it on Sunday and he did not know he was quoting you.
He said that he did not want to bother anybody about it. He said it lightly, in passing, about something that a single question would have resolved in about a minute, and then he moved on to something else.
And you recognized the sentence immediately, because it is yours, and because it was your father's before it was yours.
Nobody ever taught it. That is the thing about it. There was no evening where your father sat you down and explained that this family does not ask people for things. It was simply never done, in front of you, for eighteen years, and a rule that is never spoken is the most durable kind there is.
And you have now done the same thing, without a word, for nineteen years.
Here is what I want to say before anything else. It was not a bad rule and your father was not a fool. In the world he was in, asking cost something real, and not asking was a form of protection, and he was protecting you.
But your son is now standing outside a door that is genuinely open, holding a rule that was made for a different door, and he cannot see that the two are not the same.
Bear ye one another burdens
There is an instruction in Galatians that is short and that most people read as being about the strong helping the weak.
Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2, King James Version)
One another. That is the phrase that changes it.
It is not: bear the burdens of those in need. It is mutual and it is reciprocal, and a mutual arrangement requires, structurally, that everybody in it does both halves. Somebody who only ever carries and never hands anything over has removed themselves from the arrangement, however generous they look while doing it.
You are half of something that requires both halves, and a man who only ever carries has never once been inside the arrangement Scripture describes. Galatians 6:2 makes the bearing mutual by the plainest possible wording, and the Holy Spirit is the one in a kitchen after a Sunday phone call.
And now the second half, which is the part that should stop a person.
And so the law of Christ is fulfilled.
That is an enormous clause to attach to something as ordinary as letting somebody carry something for you. It says that the mutual carrying is not a nice extra. It is the mechanism by which an entire law is met.
You are permitted to be on the receiving half of it, and a man letting somebody carry something for him has never once been a man who had failed at anything. Galatians 6:2 hangs the meeting of a whole law on the mutual carrying, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a receiving half available to a man who has only ever done the other one.
Which means that a man who never asks is not merely being independent. He is standing outside something central, politely, for forty years.
You have been outside something central and calling it self reliance, and never asking anybody for anything has never once been the same as fulfilling anything. The Spirit of God is the one who tells a man what his independence has actually cost him, and the written word attaches the whole law to the mutual carrying.
What he cannot see from where he is
Now the practical part, and it is about him rather than about you.
He does not know he is following a rule.
That is the difficulty with rules that were never spoken. He experiences not asking as a fact about the world, not as a choice: bothering people is simply what it is, and he would be genuinely surprised to be told that other families operate differently.
And so he cannot argue with it, or weigh it, or decide about it, because you cannot examine something you do not know is there.
You are able to make a rule visible so that he can decide about it, and something that was never once said out loud has never once been available for anybody to examine. Galatians 6:2 puts the carrying in the plainest mutual language available, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings an unspoken thing into the daylight.
And here is the thing that will not work, and it is worth knowing before it gets tried.
Telling him will not do it.
If you ring him and say that he should ask people for help, he will agree with you, sincerely, and change nothing whatsoever, because the rule was not installed by a sentence and it will not be removed by one. It was installed by nineteen years of watching a man never ask anybody for anything.
It comes out the same way it went in.
Not asking for help is not a verdict on a family.
You are able to unteach something the way it was taught, and a rule installed by nineteen years of watching has never once been undone by one phone call. Galatians 6:2 describes an action rather than an attitude, and the Spirit of God is the one who works through what a son sees rather than through what he is told.
Ask somebody for something in front of him
So here is the thing to do, and it will be more uncomfortable than it sounds.
Ask one person for one small thing this week, in front of your son or where he can hear about it. And do not apologize while you do it.
Small. A hand with something. A lift. Borrowing a tool. It genuinely does not matter what it is, because the content is not the lesson.
You are able to ask for something small out loud, and one ordinary request has never once cost a man anything in the eyes of the person watching. The Holy Spirit is the one standing in a driveway where a man asks his neighbor for a hand, and it is written in Galatians 6:2 to bear ye one another's burdens.
And do not apologize. That is the whole of it, and it will be very hard.
No sorry to bother you. No I would not normally ask. No I hate to do this. Every one of those is the old rule leaking out of the side of the new act, and your son will hear the apology far more clearly than the request, and what he will learn is that asking requires an apology, which is the rule again in a new coat.
Ask it flat. Can you give me a hand with this. Then let them.
You are able to ask without the apology attached, and a plain request has never once been an imposition on somebody who was in a position to say no. Scripture makes the carrying mutual without one word about apologizing for being on the receiving half of it, and the same Spirit who wrote it that way is standing in the driveway.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man who heard his own sentence come out of his son on Sunday.
You are able to hand him a different rule, and forty years of never asking anybody for anything has never once been the only thing a father can pass down. I am not going to tell you your father was wrong and I am not going to tell you it comes easily. Galatians 6:2 says bear ye one another's burdens, and so the law of Christ is fulfilled, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who was in that kitchen on Sunday.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have a son standing outside a door that is genuinely open, and a rule made for a different door has never once been a rule he chose for himself. The written word makes the carrying mutual in the plainest possible words, and the Spirit of God is the one in the driveway when you ask for a hand and do not apologize.
One small thing. Out loud. No sorry.
Declare this over yourself
- Rule in this family that nobody ever spoke out loud, you are forty years old and you came from a good man, and you were never once made for the door my son is standing outside. Galatians 6:2 says bear ye one another's burdens, so by the Holy Spirit I ask somebody for one small thing this week where he can see it, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that asking for help makes a man into somebody who could not manage, you have never once been what that verse describes. The written word makes the carrying mutual and hangs the whole law on it, and by the Spirit of God I stop calling my half of it independence.
- Father, You made the bearing go both ways in the plainest words there are, and You attached the fulfilling of a law to it. Your word says one another, so by Your Spirit I ask out loud, and I leave the apology off the front of it.
