The second night was worse than the first.
The first night there was still something to do. There was the drive back, and the unpacking of the car, and the peculiar business of the house being quiet at nine o'clock, and the two of you had that to be busy about.
The second night you sat down at the table and there were two plates.
And it went well enough. It went perfectly well. You talked about him for the first eleven minutes, which was easy, and then you talked about the traffic, and then there was a stretch where neither of you said anything and both of you noticed.
Then somebody said something about the boiler.
Here is the thing that has been quietly frightening one of you, and possibly both, and neither of you has said it: for the first time in about twenty years, the two of you are the only people in the room, and it turns out that a very large amount of what you say to each other has been about somebody else.
Not all of it. But a lot of it. The logistics of them, the worry about them, the funny thing one of them said, the arrangements, the lifts, the appointments.
And now the logistics have gone somewhere else, and what is left at that table is two people who have not had to think of a subject in a very long time.
Therefore shall a man leave
There is a sentence about leaving right at the start of the book, and everybody quotes it at weddings, and almost nobody reads it as a description of what happens to the parents.
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. (Genesis 2:24, King James Version)
Read it from the other side of the room. From where the father and the mother are standing.
That verse describes a leaving as normal. Not as a rupture, not as a loss, not as something to be survived. It is stated as the ordinary and intended shape of a life: children go, and the going is written into the design at the very beginning, before anything has gone wrong with anything.
And the same sentence names what the two people who are left are, and what they were before any of the leaving started. One flesh. That did not begin when the children arrived and it does not end when they go.
You are two people who were one thing before any of this started, and twenty years of logistics have never once been able to unmake what the logistics were sitting on top of. The Holy Spirit is the one at a table where two plates feel like a strange number, and Genesis 2:24 puts the leaving into the design rather than into the accidents.
So the quiet at that table is not a diagnosis.
It is what happens when two people who have been running a household with five people in it are suddenly running one with two, and every single conversational habit they built was built for the larger version.
You are out of practice and not out of love, and a silence at dinner has never once been the same thing as having nothing to say. The written word calls the leaving ordinary and the joining permanent, and the Spirit of God is the one who knows which of the two the quiet belongs to.
What you have actually lost
Let me name it precisely, because vagueness is what makes this frightening.
You are two people who have lost a subject and not each other, and an evening with nothing obvious to say has never once been a report on a marriage. Genesis 2:24 names two people one flesh with no children anywhere in the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can tell an empty topic from an empty room.
Nothing has happened to the intimacy. What has gone is the subject matter.
For twenty years the two of you had an inexhaustible topic that arrived new every single day and required no effort at all to introduce. What happened at school. Who is not speaking to whom. Whether he has done the thing. What she said in the car. The subject came to you. Neither of you ever had to think of anything.
And a couple who has never once had to think of a subject will, on the second night, discover that they are extremely out of practice at thinking of one. That is not a marriage in trouble. That is a skill that has gone unused, in exactly the way a language you do not speak for twenty years goes quiet without ever leaving you.
A quiet dinner is not a verdict on twenty years.
You are holding a rusty skill and not a dead one, and one awkward evening has never once been evidence about what the two of you are. The Holy Spirit is the one who restores a thing that was only ever put down, and Genesis 2:24 names the two of you as one flesh with no children mentioned in the sentence at all.
Now, the harder part, and I will say it plainly because somebody has to.
There is a small fear sitting under this in one of you. It goes something like: what if there is nothing here. What if we became parents and stopped being anything else, and now the parenting has moved out and we are two housemates with a shared mortgage and a history.
I want to tell you what that fear actually is. It is not information. It is the second night.
You are hearing a fear and not a finding, and one quiet stretch at a dinner table has never once been able to report on twenty years. Genesis 2:24 joins two people into one flesh and does not attach an expiry to it, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates a frightened thought from a true one.
Ask one question that is not about them
So here is the change, and it is one question long.
At dinner this week, ask the other one something about themselves that has nothing to do with any of your children.
Not a big question. Not "are we all right", which puts a whole marriage on the table over a plate of food. Something small and specific and about them.
What was the best part of your week. What is the thing at work that keeps annoying you. What did you think about that street we drove down. If you had this Saturday completely free what would you actually do with it.
You are able to ask about the person and not about the household, and one small question has never once been too little to start a language up again. It is written in Genesis 2:24 that the two become one flesh, which is a sentence about them and not about what they organize, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in a first attempt that comes out clumsy.
It will be clumsy. Expect that. There is a decent chance the other one will answer it as a logistics question by reflex, because that is the groove worn into both of you, and you will have to ask it again slightly differently.
Ask it again. The second version is where the actual conversation is.
You are able to try a second time in the same evening, and a first attempt landing badly has never once meant the attempt was wrong. Scripture puts the joining of two people at the very beginning and leaves it standing, and the same Spirit who wrote that line is at the table on the night the second attempt gets made.
So here is what I believe is going out over two people at a table built for five.
You are two people who chose each other before any of this started, and twenty years of talking about the children has never once meant there is nothing else there. I am not going to tell you to book a holiday and I am not going to hand you a list of conversation starters. Genesis 2:24 says they shall be one flesh, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is in the room on the second night.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have a subject sitting across the table from you, and the fact that it stopped arriving by itself has never once meant it has gone. The written word puts the leaving into the design and the joining beyond it, and the Spirit of God is the one who is going to be in the question you ask this week.
One question. About them. Not about any of the children.
Declare this over yourself
- Quiet at a table set for two, you are strange and you are new, and you were never a report on twenty years of a marriage. Genesis 2:24 says they shall be one flesh, so by the Holy Spirit I ask my wife one question about herself tonight, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that we are two housemates now, you have never once been information. The written word joins two people at the beginning and attaches no expiry to it, and by the Spirit of God I am done reading a second night as a finding.
- Father, You wrote the leaving into the design before anything had gone wrong with anything, and You called what is left one flesh. Your word says it plainly, so by Your Spirit I speak to the person across this table as a person, and not as the other half of an arrangement.
